Casa Encantada in Bel-Air

The Bel Air compound is owned by billionaire and founder of Global Crossing Gary Winnick. The former telecom mogul purchased this home, named Casa Encantada, in 2001 for $94M. Built in 1938, it is known as the "Weber Mansion", or "Weber–Hilton–Murdoch estate", after a prior owner. The mansion has a whopping 20 bathrooms and is 28,725 square feet. This modern Georgian masterpiece is elegantly perched on its own eight plus acre promontory in Bel-Air. Architect James E. Dolena designed the estate in the shape of an H to provide city, ocean and garden views from all 60 of its rooms.

The home was originally built in 1934 for  Hilda Boldt Weber, the widow of a glass bottle manufacturer. Weber originally purchased the home for $100,000, equivalent of $1.9M today. Since then it has had many owners, notably Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels and David Murdock of Dole Foods. Both spent big money on the house with Hilton spending the equivalent of $2.4M in today’s dollars and Murdock dropping $12.4M. Even the current owner ‘only’ spent $95M on it.  Winnick has reportedly restored its original 1930s classic detailing and there are nearly 100 archival photos of the interior online some of which some are featured below. In addition to the H shaped main house, the property also comes equipped with a motor court in the back, a rose garden, koi ponds, a basketball court, a lighted tennis court, a home movie theater, a rose garden, a bar, and multiple greenhouses..Upon entrance, visitors are greeted by a large fountain and then four massive pillars surrounding the front door. The pillars continue inside the foyer of the house which also includes a spiral staircase up to the second level. The rooms are large and open with high ceilings and can be easily made into whatever you like.

The home is adorned with various sculptures and decadent works of art.  Designed by famed architect James E Dolena, the main home's interior features a dramatic entrance with 18-foot ceilings.  Furnishings and interior designs were created by the iconic T.H. Robsjohn- Gibbings, setting a new standard for lavish home design. With no neighbors and surrounded by the fairways of the Bel-Air Country Club golf course, the compound is expansive, private and secure and is less than ten minutes to Rodeo Drive.

Once owned by Conrad Hilton, the hotel magnate hosted some of the most significant social, charitable and political events in the country and over its storied history has been host to several Presidential Dinners. Hilton described the home as an “object of symmetry and beauty.” As a 30 year resident, it was from Casa Encantada where he grew the brand into the world’s first global hotel chain.

With a seemingly impossible intimate feeling, the estate welcomes guests with curved iron gates that swing gracefully from stone bases. The sweeping driveway guides through lush, green surroundings to lead visitors into the warm embrace of the main residence. The dramatic entry hall leads with 18-foot ceilings that open into a majestic reception hall, dining room, walnut paneled library, living room and family room. The home’s second story features living quarters that perfectly juxtapose the residence’s entertainment-centric first story.

An architectural pool house boasts a professional screening room, formal bar, and vistas to the rose gardens and beyond. A north-south lighted tennis court and separately constructed basketball court, full guest house, greenhouses, and house manager’s quarters along with koi ponds and irreplaceable landscaping makes this arguably one of the finest estates in the world.
