Florida Is Ranked The Worst State In The U.S. To Live In.

By Leah Thomas
Newsweek

Thrillist released a definitive ranking of the states in July with a “go big or go home” ranking system based on, literally, "everything."

"Everything" being their contributions to America: important, well-known people, inventions, food and drink, and unique physical beauty and landmarks.

And Florida, apparently, has none of those things.

"When putting together a list such as this, there can be some temptation to defy popular expectations and go against the grain," the site said.

“However, Florida’s awfulness resume is so staggeringly impressive that it couldn’t go any other way.”

So which states ranked high on the list?

The state that broke most likely every prediction ever by topping the list was none other than Michigan.

Despite Detroit’s bad rep, the site argues that Michigan has more coastline than any other state (except for Alaska). The site also mentions the undeniable beauty of the Upper Peninsula and its residents’ willingness to apologize for their creation of Kid Rock. Michigan made the top of the list for its “embarrassment of beer riches” and how it has become a “rising underdog you can’t help but root for,” Thrillist states.

Maine made the No. 2 spot, with Kentucky at No. 3.

The states that ranked close with Florida are Delaware at No. 49, Ohio at 48 and Arizona at 47Barely beating out Florida,  Thrillist has (somewhat rightfully) dubbed Ohio the “Florida of the North.” Ouch.

California and New York rank lower than expected at numbers 9 and 13, respectively.

So what makes Florida so god-awful?

"I lived there for four years as a reporter in central and south Florida, and love it in the way that only a person who has gotten the hell out possibly can," Thrillist travel editor Sam Eifling told Newsweek. "Florida is where bath salts and Creed and the Great Recession all got their starts. It's where Donald Trump has chosen to hang out for seven solid weeks during the past year. I mean, c'mon."

Florida’s rep has also been permanently damaged since that fateful day in 1981 when Miami became the birthplace of American rapper and Mr. Worldwide: Pitbull.

But according to this reporter's experience, what the southern state lacks in overall quality of life, it makes up for in amusement parks. Florida owes all that it has to Disney World and Universal Studios.

Despite its unfavorable ranking, Thrillist remains optimistic for the Sunshine State. It leaves Florida with a message of encouragement and positivity: “You were born for this. Embrace it.”

Today's Best Mortgage Rates.
Mortgage Rates Surge to Highest Levels in More Than 3 Years
Jan 29 2018, 4:39PM

Mortgage rates are in trouble.  This will come as no surprise to regular readers.  For the past few weeks, rates made several successive runs up to the highest levels in more than 9 months.  It was really only the spring of 2017 that stood in the way of rates being the highest since early 2014.  After Friday marked another "highest in 9 months" day, it would only have taken a moderate movement to break into the "3+ year" territory.  The move ended up being even bigger.

From a week and a half ago, most borrowers are now looking at another eighth of a percentage point higher in rate.  In total, rates are up the better part of half a point since December 15th.  This marks the only time rates have risen this much without having been at long term lows in the past year.  For example, late 2010, mid-2013, mid-2015, and late 2016 all saw sharper increases in rates overall, but each of those moves happened only 1-3 months after a long term rate low.

The current trend continues to offer false hope with potential ceilings that are quickly broken.  Rates have then had a challenging time getting back below those levels.  This is classic  behavior for these sorts of big, serious market movements and part of the reason we've continued to advocate a defensive stance despite periodic victories.  Such victories are bound to occur in any interest rate environment.  We need to see bigger victories and more of them if it's going to make any sort of sense to be anything other than defensive when approaching the current interest rate landscape.  Lock early and plan on rates moving higher until we see a broad shift in momentum.  Rest assured, I'll be writing all about it whenever it finally happens.
