Charles A. Riddle had this residence built for his family by local Seattle architect Edwin W. Houghton in 1899.  A successful attorney, Charles lived in the home with his wife Louise and daughters Louise and Katherine until his death in 1932.The Riddle house is considered the city's finest example of the Shingle style. It was featured in the book "Homes and Gardens of the Pacific Coast, 1913," which noted the well-lighted and sunny rooms. Although the house has been slightly altered over the years, its original character remains. The interior was remodeled in 1941 by architect Otis Hancock, with further interior changes in 1980. A restoration and a small addition were done by Hoshide Williams Architects in 2000.

This Shingle style house is distinguished by its rounded forms, smoothly covered with wood shingles, making the cladding an organic skin. The main volume is a side gable with a two-story rounded bay on the west elevation. The entry is near the center of the main (north) façade, beneath a rounded balcony with a simple balustrade. A one-over-one double-hung window with a Queen Anne style upper sash opens onto the balcony; a small gable is above the window. Adjacent to the entry on the east is a wide bay with rounded corners, a hipped roof and tall leaded glass windows with a delicate pattern; dimaond-paned windows are on the top floor. The east elevation has three leaded casement windows with shingled sides curving in; below is a secondary entry with a simple hood and Queen Anne-style windows. The west elevation has a striking two-story rounded bay, integrated into the roofline; the bay is predominantly glass with eight transomed windows on each story. The rear (south) of the house rises 3-1/2 stories. The roof sweeps down over a full-width porch with columns; most of the windows on this side are newer, to increase enjoyment of the view.

at 1401 Sugar Loaf Drive, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011 with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths and 2,935 sq.ft it is listed for sale at $2,995,000.

Perched on a hillside on a 49,000 square foot lot, the approximately 3000 square foot home was designed by renowned architect John C. Lindsay with interiors and furnishing by a team from Barker Bothers Furniture Company of which a few items remain at the property. Ten thousand manufactures were invited to submit their products from the roof to the floor and everything in between of which two hundred were chosen and their products used in the in the construction of the home.

Rates Rising as North Korea Talks Baseball
Aug 15 2017, 3:21PM

Mortgage rates continued higher today as markets reacted to news that North Korea would tactically abstain from launching nuclear weapons at Guam because it was having such a good time watching the "foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees."  Perhaps Kim Jong Un is a Sox fan?  Someone should tell him that series is over and that the Mets might not put up as much of a fight.

Or perhaps "Yankees" referred to America in general.  Either way, markets took solace in the absence of global nuclear war by buying stocks and selling bonds.  Net selling pressure in bonds pushes rates higher.  Strong economic data in the morning only added to bond market weakness.

Fortunately, movement in rates continues to be muted by historical standards.  Most consumers would still be seeing the same rates quoted today that were available last Friday (which were the lowest since November 2016) with the only adjustments being slightly higher upfront costs.
